7 Ways to Get Paid Faster (That Actually Work)
Late payments are usually a process problem, not a client problem. Fix the process and the money arrives on time.
Chasing invoices is the least fun part of freelancing. The good news: most late payments can be prevented before the invoice is even sent. Seven habits that consistently shorten the gap between “work done” and “money in the bank.”
- Invoice immediately. Send the invoice the same day you deliver — every day you wait is a day added to payment.
- Set short, clear terms. Net 14 beats Net 30 more often than you would expect, especially with repeat clients.
- Make payment frictionless. Include bank details or a payment link directly on the invoice.
- Number invoices sequentially. It makes your reminder emails concrete: “invoice INV-014 is 7 days overdue.”
- Add a late fee clause. Even 1.5% per month, stated politely on the invoice, changes client prioritization.
- Send friendly reminders on a schedule — 3 days before due, on the due date, and 7 days after.
- For big projects, ask for a deposit. 30–50% up front filters out non-serious clients.
None of this requires expensive software. A professional PDF with clear terms does most of the work — which is exactly what a good invoice generator gives you for free.
